2. How long does a sterilization cycle take in a portable autoclave?
The length of a sterilization cycle in a portable autoclave typically ranges between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the load size and the type of material being sterilized. However, this time doesn’t include the heating-up phase or the cool-down period, which can add another 10 to 30 minutes. The standard sterilization cycle usually occurs at 121°C (250°F) and 15 psi of pressure for 15 to 20 minutes.

It works by heating water to produce steam within a sealed chamber. This steam reaches temperatures of around 121–134°C (250–273°F) and, under pressure, it penetrates deep into instruments, effectively killing bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores.
